Based on the severity of the El Nios impact, the price of maize is likely to go up from 33% to 85% in 2016-17.

South Africa is the largest and most active producer of maize in the southern African region and alone accounted for 42% of Africas maize trade, with 69% in the form of imports in 2015. South Africas maize production slumped by 30% this year, and as a result, it had to import 770,000 metric tons of maize from outside the African continent.
